As we enter Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Optimum Healthcare IT would like to share some of the key elements we have put in place to make our clients successful. Over the past ten years working with many healthcare providers, technology providers to healthcare, and government agencies, there are standard fundamentals that each organization needs to have in place to ensure success. We divide these into distinct categories of people, technology, process, and culture.

Great security starts with an organizational culture that recognizes the importance of supporting and advocating for the security team at the board and executive levels. We have spent significant effort to educate corporate boards and senior executives. We are happy to see that most organizations now support the organizational and process change that develops a strong cybersecurity program.

The most crucial element of a Cybersecurity program are qualified, motivated, and capable people. We have turned around a billion-dollar organization from a very low maturity level to a leader in less than nine months with only three full-time security staff. This, unfortunately, is not the norm. We’ve struggled at organizations with much larger teams to make progress due to differences in culture, politics, and lack of support for building the right team – a group of appropriately compensated, motivated, and collaborative individuals who are driven to act as the builders and protectors of the organization’s security defenses.

Technology, while very important, is not going to do the job on its own.  However, there is a key investment that each organization has to make to prevent itself from becoming an easy target.  We have developed a value-based “recipe” for security investment that starts with a foundation of essential tools and technologies and expands as an organization builds the team and expertise to utilize more advanced tools. We’d be happy to share that recipe.

We also focus on accelerating our clients in a few essential key processes: patch and vulnerability management, backups, and practice incident response plans.

Our organization aims to help protect the healthcare sector from the growing cyber threat landscape. This is not just our business. This is our passion and our mission.  We’d love to talk with you to share our experiences and to provide guidance. Certainly, our goal is to make you a customer, but we are here to make a difference and be a resource for the industry if you have any questions.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month, now in its 18th year, raises awareness about the importance of cybersecurity across our Nation, ensuring that all Americans have the resources they need to be safer and more secure online.
