A holistic approach to comprehensive IT solutions for healthcare.
Background
Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) is a not-for-profit community health system dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of the people of Northeast Georgia. NGHS is anchored by Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s five hospital campuses – NGMC Gainesville, NGMC Braselton, NGMC Barrow, NGMC Habersham, and NGMC Lumpkin – with a total of more than 950 beds and more than 1,300 medical staff members representing more than 60 specialties.
Challenge
Large-scale organizations often face significant challenges when undertaking transformational initiatives, such as a cloud-first journey. For Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS), this journey began eight to nine months ago when leaders evaluated the end-of-life timelines for core systems, particularly storage infrastructure. This evaluation led to a broader question: What should the future technology platform strategy look like? As part of this process, NGHS explored cloud adoption as a critical component of its long-term IT roadmap.
Two key priorities driving this strategic shift emerged: cyber resiliency and business continuity. A decade ago, disaster recovery (DR) focused on maintaining essential operations. Today, however, healthcare organizations function as digital enterprises, where technology underpins every aspect of the patient journey—from initial engagement to critical end-of-life decisions. This evolution has redefined what DR means, making it clear that NGHS needed a more contemporary approach than previously implemented.
The health system carefully assessed industry trends and its existing architecture, recognizing that moving legacy systems without strategic planning would lead to unnecessary costs. Timing and sequencing were crucial in determining the most efficient path forward. While NGHS has a robust and cost-effective data center, moving to the cloud was not about infrastructure alone. Instead, it was about enhancing cyber resilience, ensuring rapid recovery, and shifting from a traditional DR model to a comprehensive business continuity plan.
Beyond resiliency, agility was another primary consideration. As NGHS continues to expand its services, the ability to scale quickly and securely is essential to meet the evolving needs of patients and providers. A cloud-based infrastructure provides the flexibility to adapt to rapid demand fluctuations while maintaining the highest levels of security and compliance.
Ultimately, the move to a multi-cloud environment is about ensuring that NGHS’s technology platforms are not just operational but optimized for reliability, security, and performance—24/7, 365 days a year—because patient care depends on them. To execute this strategy effectively, NGHS is working with Best in KLAS partners to implement a thoughtful, application-by-application migration approach, ensuring that each system is evaluated for its best-fit cloud solution rather than relying on a simple lift-and-shift model.
”On our cloud-first journey, we needed a partner in the passenger seat coaching us to optimize the experience. We look for organizations that are as invested in the journey as we are. And that helps to accelerate where we want to go. That’s why we chose to work with those with the same approach. Optimum Healthcare IT and AWS are the ones we need in our passenger seat.

Solution
NGHS partnered with Optimum Healthcare IT to develop a strong foundation for its cloud-first journey. To better understand NGHS’ existing network and application landscape and how they behave and perform across the entire enterprise, the two organizations worked together to lay the groundwork for the future. As a part of its cloud journey, NGHS and Optimum Healthcare IT chose to work with the public cloud vendor Amazon Web Service (AWS).
