In Q2 2019, major health data breaches continued at a pace of over one per day. Of the 122 health data breaches in the quarter, hacking and unauthorized access/disclosure attributed to 89% of the total incidents. The most significant reported incident was Dominion Dental Services, Inc., Dominion National Insurance Company, and Dominion Dental Services USA, Inc. (health plan), where over 2.9M individuals were affected. The largest provider security breach was Hospital Pavia Hato Rey, where just over 305,000 individuals were affected. For the quarter, a total of 6.4M individuals fell victim to a data breach.
As required by section 13402(e)(4) of the HITECH Act, the Secretary must post a list of breaches of unsecured protected health information affecting 500 or more individuals.
